It was six weeks into my first session of First Draft Friday, a class I made up for female entrepreneurs in Honolulu, Hawaii who wanted to write books that build community, brand awareness, and authority.
I was putting together a resource guide for the writers which included books on writing, favorite cafés to sit and journal in, and publishing options. But when it came time to include software, I wasn’t sure what to include.
It’s not that there isn’t good writing software out there. There is.
It’s just that it’s all made for writers who know what they want to write about.
But what about people who have something to say but don’t identify as “writers” yet?
What about the woman who runs a business, leads a movement, or mentors others and simply wants her voice and story in a book, without a ghostwriter, without losing her spark?
I searched, I Googled, I asked AI and tried all “book-writing” tools already out there and none of them were what I really wanted.
Some could write out an entire book for you in seconds. It just didn’t seem authentic in that I wanted a program that could write with me and not for me.
The Lightbulb Moment
During one session, I told my student to voice the paragraph that felt too hard to write.
It was interesting because I could see her eyes light up instantly. I caught her attention and realized that was the missing link. Speaking your ideas instead of just writing them could be the differentiator. Her reaction was like watching a monumental shift in recognition of what had been possible to what actually is possible now.
That’s when I knew I was onto something.
What if I built a really low tech stack? I was thinking a Google Form with my writing prompts and a place for them to record their answers by voice?
Then I could take their responses and organize them into book sections behind the scenes.
It wasn’t perfect, but it worked. Right? And the magic wasn’t in the form, it was in them hearing themselves voice their thoughts.
That’s when I realized this could become something much bigger.
The Aspiration Gap
Eighty-two percent of people say they want to write a book.
Only one percent ever do.
If I wanted to close that gap, I couldn’t do this one book at a time.
I needed a platform.
One day, while teaching First Draft Friday, I mentioned my idea to this same student who would become my very first advisor. She said, “We should talk.” It turns out, she knew tech and Silicon Valley startups.
That conversation changed everything.
She introduced me to the world of dev shops, the teams who could actually help me build what I was imagining. I interviewed a few before finding the one that understood the vision.
And that’s how TellaDraft was born.
